Credit lines ! Oh my!

June 27th, 2007 at 02:52 am

I got an email from one of my credit cards, notifying me that they've increased my credit line. I haven't carried a balance on any of the cards in at least 2 years, but for some reason, they still love me.

I have a few store cards that I use for discounts and coupons. And I have 6 major credit cards. I only use 2 of them, but I haven't gotten around to closing the others. Mainly because I didn't want to mess with my credit bureau prior to buying the house. Now I am thinking about closing some of them.

But right now, I'm just amazed at the credit lines that I have available to me.

CC#1 $2,400.00 limit
CC#2 $3,000.00 limit
CC#3 $4,000.00 limit
CC#4 $6,500.00 limit
CC#5 $7,500.00 limit
CC#6 $13,200.00 limit

Geeze! Like I would EVER use that much if any of the credit available to me.

In a spending update, I brought lunch/dinner to work with me today, only to find it spoiled. So I grabbed a salad from the salad place. A $6.00 super huge salad (I'll have to take a pic next time I get one). It covered me for lunch & dinner AND I finished off the last bit when I got home from work. Not too bad.

Tomorrow, we're having a team outing at work. Except we're staying in to play trivia games. Dull, but not my choice. On the upside, we're ordering food from one of my favorite take-out places! I'm either going to get a sub & split it between lunch and dinner, or get a pasta dish with bread and salad. Which, I'd also split between lunch and dinner. The pasta might last until lunch on Thursday too. We'll see.

Oh, and for an overtime update: I worked 4 hours on Monday, 3 hours today, I'll work 3 hours tomorrow. I might get some time in on Thursday, depending on a doctors appointment, and I'll get 3 hours in on Friday. I'm doing all I can, just in case overtime is no longer available in July.

If that's the case, I'll be looking for a part-time job QUICK!

There's something surreal about credit these days.

I have accounts going back nearly 40 years, and some of them increase my credit limits with automatic zeal every couple of years. I could load up my wallet with a hundred grand of potential debt if I carried the plastic.

Maybe I could charge a Buick.

I'm thankfull that where I live the CC companies don't automatically up your credit limit. Sure they send annoying mail such as "You've been pre-approved for $xxxxx limit" but it's subject to you filling in a form advising them of your income and expenditure and their lending criteria.

Goodness knows how much trouble DH could've gotten in over the years if they just upped his limit automatically EEK!

yeah they don't do that for me either, i always get a form to fill out.
and don't all those 6 credit cards cost you in fees or are they fee-free ones? i have one that costs $77 a year and the other is free. when i buy a house i will have to cancel one card and drop the other one's limit down to $2000 because otherwise they take off a couple of thousand that they are able to loan you.

All the cards are no fee cards. There's no cost to me to keep them open. I would NEVER pay an annual fee. And if any of the cards start charging a fee for not carrying a balance (which some companies say they may start doing), I'd close those cards too.

Reflectionite... there are a lot of cards without fees. The credit card companies are tricky though... they offer different types of products, you just have research until you find the right one. For example, MBNA, now Bank of America, has 100s of credit card types. Most have fees, but some don't. Same goes for Chase and American Express, just to name a few.

here the amex is $195 a year or $395 a year, and you have to earn over a certain amount to get one in the first place (the lower costing one is $40 000 p.a, the higher cotsing one is $70 000 p.a) with virgin you only need $15000 disposable. and with amex most places dont accept it. i did a search on no fee cc's, there are 11 that i can find Smile wizard, austral, bank of qld, commbank, ge, nab, st george, teachers credit union, virgin and westpac....
