spending while upset---and the awful reason I'm upset!

July 12th, 2006 at 11:43 pm

Ok, so I recently wrote about not needing to buy Money Magazine, even at the price of $10.00 per year. Well, I impulse bought a subscription to Kiplinger's Personal Finance. 2 years (24 months) for $6.90. I can't believe I did that. I'm totally having buyers remorse. I definately know I got a good deal and that I will read the magazine, but Geesh! I need to learn to control myself.

I'm having a bit of a pity party. We received our medical benfits info today & I signed up for the best plan for me. But the prescriptions stink. I previously paid $80.00 for a 3 month supply of Protonix. (AND I thought that was a lot). Now I'm going to tell you how much a 3 month supply will cost me now, but first I must warn you....

...don't read further if you get upset easily...

...a 3 month supply is $315.00 !!!!
I almost cried. I really wouldn't have taken this job if I new the prescriptions would be so expensive. I'm planning on talking to my doctor about alternatives and calling the prescription company to see if there are any exemptions (which I highly doubt). There are no generics for this medicine & no other medication that close to it. So I'm kinda stuck on options.

I really could cry though. Its so fustrating. If I stop taking the medicine, then my stomach will start deteriorating, I'll start throwing up all the time again and I'll end up with more medical bills than before.

At this rate, I'll have to take a part-time job just to cover that medication. In the meantime, I am seriously considering reestablishing my job search again in September.

I'll think things through when I've calmed down a bit, right now I'm very upset

Have you called Costco or looked on their site for their price? They tend to be cheaper.

Any way to split that medication?

Didn't the new insurer offer a drug discount card? Are you a AAA member? They have a prescription discount card for members.

If it's new your doctor is probably swimming in free samples. Ask.

I so sorry! I know how frustrating this situation can be.

    There is a rebate program:

Thanks very much Katwoman. I'll definately check that site out. The $315 is with the prescription discount. Its just because its a non-preferred medication, even though theres no generic alternative. I'm definatley going to be pricing at Costco, online prescription services and anywhere I can think of. I just am waiting to start the research. I have enough of the prescription to last another 2 months. Its just really upsetting that my new company would participate in such an expensive plan when they pride theirselves on being so employee oriented.

In addition to the above, I would ask your doctor and pharmacist if they are aware of any other ways to get discounts.

If bottow line is that you are now paying that much, you may want to weigh the job options for better insurance. ...and i agree with you...that sucks!

Also, make sure you take advantage of the medical flexible spending account during your next benefits open-enrollment. Figure out what it cost you per year for medical expenses, and they'll take it out pretax. Better than nothing.

    Not to get personal but...

    http://www.fda.gov/cder/consumerinfo/druginfo/protonix.htm

FDA says it should only be an 8 week treatment with additional treatments only if it didnt work?

Perhaps there is a substitute drug your doctor can prescribe you. Sounds like all this worry and stress isnt going to help your condition!

    Good luck!

I don't know if this will make you feel any better, but we have never had any medical or prescription coverage. We have always had to pay full price for every medicine we take, or doctor visit we make. My husband had some pills that cost $390 for 3 months. But it kept him from getting sick, so we felt it was well worth it.
