Not So Great Start to the New Year

January 1st, 2009 at 07:05 pm

Ugh, Jan 1st & I'm sick AND I managed to duplicate a payment to my mortgage, overdrawing my household expenses checking account. I've set up a transfer from ING Savings to cover the deficit, but man thats annoying. And I only have myself to blame. I've NEVER overdrawn an account before.

Yesterday was awesome. I was let out of work 3 hours early. Had an inpromtu lunch out with some friends. Headed home and got dressed up. Met friends for a quick Happy Hour at the pub. My friend bought the first round and wouldn't accept any money from me. So yay free drink!

Then I headed to a friend's house to help set up for a party. It was a LOT of fun.

Today I had all these grand plans of stuff to do and now I'm just spending it on the couch. I made a quick run to the closest store for food and I picked up a redbox movie.

I already have a yearly budget & January budget set up. Im working on my financial goals, which I normally have done by mid December. But a few things are up in the air & I'll have more info by Jan 15th, so I've got tentative goals until then.

I'm also planning on working on some mini challanges for myself. January I'm going to work on packing breakfast, lunch & snacks for work. With only 1 time expected to eat out (monthly work lunch out). That a LOT of packed food. It'll be a challange.

if you have never overdrawn your account before i would highly recommend you call your bank and explain nicely, if you think you will get a charge for it. i did the same a year ago and, even though it took two calls (the first guy i spoke to was an ass - i hung up on him and called back and got a nicer lady) i explained i had never done it before, and that (they will be able to see this on your record) i had transferred money into my account as soon as i found out what i had done to rectify the overdraw. she said it was a one time only, and that she was only doing it because my account was in good form. $40 - back in my pocket! Smile you only get one chance so its best to try.

My DH is sick too! I have been packing my breakfast, lunch and snack for work. I have a fairly good sized soft sided Coleman "ice chest". It's about 12 x 12 x 4 or so. I cook oatmeal about every 3rd day and put it in those ziplock twist plaster bowls. I have a little container for brown sugar. I have several different containers for milk, or Crystal Light. I make soup and freeze in containers for lunch. I have peanut butter in the frig at work and pack English muffins. I take real butter knives and spoons, not plastic. When done, I put everything back in the Coleman container. I pack fruit and almonds.

Good luck, it is a big commitment, but every day I don't buy anything to eat, I feel it's a victory!
