New Addition to the Family before the New Addition to the Family!

April 20th, 2015 at 05:32 pm

We are adopting a dog. 2 year old Pitt mix. All shots, neutered, has lived in a Foster home with cats and kids and is incredibly family friendly.

The guy's name is Will, but we already refer to him as Tater, because the Foster family described him as a Sweet Potato. He is a slow moving dog, very relaxed and almost 'lazy'. Perfect pace for us.

I know its a not popular decision to add a dog before the baby, but we have discussed and weighed all the options. Given the environment and behavior prior to us adopting him, we are confident in his ability to fit right in.

There is a $200 Adoption cost, but no up front shots/neuter costs with the vet, so that's worth it to me.

We bought a bed, bowls, leash, collar, treats, food some toys. Roughly $98 and from our pets sinking fund.

I already increased our slush fund to account for the extra vet cost of another animal.

We are revisiting our Pet line in the budget to see how to adjust, but we are very good at finding the best deals on pet supplies.

Luckily, these expenses do not affect my Last Credit Card Paydown challenge. So I am very happy!

Congrats!! I'm in the midst of adopting too. It's such an exciting time. As for bringing him in right before the baby, people suggested I wait for my pets to adjust before introducing new ones, but I did them all while they were still in the adjustment period (my dog, my cat a month later, and now a puppy two months after the cat). I think if his world's going to change regardless, may as well throw multiple things at him at once, so he gets used to it being that way rather than him finding a status quo and then changing it.

Hope everything works out and congrats on the two coming additions!!

How will this newest addition line up with 20015 goals? How does 1st quarter line up with expectations? What area will need adjusting to cover costs for new pet? These are merely rhetoric questions because having a baby is the most life changing and challenging event possible.

Congrats! We got our first cat when I was 4 months pregnant with our first kid. Must be part of the whole nurturing instinct, huh? Wink

Thanks for the encouraging words! Debt-free by thir-ty - let us know how your adoption goes!
ceejay- I DO think its the instinct, but my husband was definitely the driving force on this decision! lol
snafu - I am lucky, I am receiving more income due to raise and overtime and my debt free but the mortgage goal will still be done earlier than expected even with the added dog expenses! We have been very lucky this year!

Mine too! I think expectant fathers must get the urge to nurture too. Smile
